The mantle: the focal point of the living room, the centerpiece for social gatherings, and the perfect display for the family's memories.

But what do you put over it? If you're looking to restore your mantle to its full potential then try some of these Cossart Design Tips on how to personalize it:

First, think BIG! Big accessories, big artwork, big impact. When it comes to mantles, bigger is always better.
Start with the art, artwork above the mantle should usually be at least two-thirds the size of the mantle. You can create the same effect by creating an array of smaller artwork. If you want a more personal feel, you can have your family memories enlarged and framed to serve as your artwork element. Frame the sides of the mantle with your largest pieces (for example, candle sticks or large vases). If you need more height, try adding some books underneath.

Second, add some dimension. Adding sculptural pieces can keep the mantle from being static and lifeless. You finally have a place to display your funky art pieces and exotic travel souvenirs! Needs some ideas? We love sculptural candle sticks, geometric vases and of course our cute animal statues! Layering will also create dimension—use bookends, small jars, vase sets, and other knick-knacks to fill in the space between your framing pieces.

Third, make it pop! Add some colorful floral arrangements or books for that extra pop of color! Bright colored candles or even colorful art will draw the eye right to your beautiful mantle.  But don’t forget about texture! Play off the textures of the mantle and wall or add different ones with textured candlesticks, abstract art, and plants.

Other tips and tricks:
-It doesn't have to be symmetrical—using framing pieces that aren’t the same height or stacking one on books and not the other can create a fun and fresh composition.
-Not feeling the bright colors? A monochromatic approach will create a traditional and classic feeling in your living room.
-You don’t have to display a large piece of artwork, you can paint the area above the mantle with an accent color, add texture by using a different material or even put up a fun wallpaper design.
-Sometimes less is more, too many accessories can overwhelm the mantle. Try to find a balance of pieces for the mantle.

Tip: instead of hanging large artwork, you can set it on the mantle and lean it against the wall for a more artistic look.

Tip: Don't overwhelm the space with too much color, the perfect amount of nuetral and vibrant pieces will add to your mantle instead of taking                                                                                                                     away from it.
