Designing a Kid’s Room That Will Stay With Them Until College

A lot of the time, it’s hard for us to justify custom design and investment into rooms suited for children. Whether it be their bedroom or playroom, taking the time and energy to curate spaces for kids seems a little impractical because let’s face it, kids grow up! As they grow and develop, their taste and aesthetic changes, too. Would your teenager want to sleep in their princess or superhero themed room that was designed in kindergarten? Probably not! So, here at Cossart Design, we can help you curate a basic design for your child’s room that can grow with them throughout the years – or at least until they are college bound and out of the home!

Shell of the room (paint or wallpaper color, flooring, rug):

To design a room that can carry your child through all phases of life, it’s best to always start with the basics. A good rule of thumb is to make sure that the “shell” of the room is neutral and will last for years. For example, choosing paint colors and flooring are easy, yet excellent places to begin when designing the space. Keeping the palette neutral will allow more freedom for accessorizing as years go by. However, there’s nothing wrong with a pop of color or even a fun patterned or textured wallpaper! If you do choose a wallpaper, it may be best to stick with a geometric shape or pattern that is timeless. Finding the balance between child-like patterns and more mature finishes can be tricky, but that’s where we are here to help!

Furniture Pieces (staple pieces):

For furniture, whether you wish to have a custom upholstered bed frame and various seating options, or just some staple pieces like a classic wooden dresser, choosing heirloom-quality furniture is essential! The more you invest in the quality of your pieces, the longer they will last and the more durable they are!

If you are aiming to add personality and character to your timeless furniture selection, a fun patterned upholstered chair is something that your child will love no matter their age!

Accessories (lighting, lamps, fans, shelving) :

Accessories are what can make your kid’s room the most fun! It is easy to change or update artwork, accent pillows and throw blankets, and other accessories as time goes by – so the bulk of your budget may be best used on the furniture in your space. In our opinion, accessories and other small details are a great area of design for your child to have a little more say or freedom in the aesthetic of their space. For example, you may style shelves with stuffed animals and books during elementary school, whereas picture frames and other personables may be collected and put on display during middle and high school - whatever your child prefers! It’s always important to let their personality shine in some form of fashion in their own space.

Children spend so much time (and years!) in their rooms, and while custom design for a child may seem like an investment, it’s worth it. Not only will it elevate the look of your whole home, but having a well designed room for your child will create an elegant, classic ambiance that will remain in style years down the road instead of investing in trendy fast fashion pieces that will need constant replacing as your child grows up.  Ready to start designing? At Cossart Design, we encourage you and your child to be a part of the design process. We can’t wait to hear more about your vision for this very important space of the home!
